Salvini a Pontida con Le Pen crepa l’alleanza e si distingue.

Il segretario della Lega, Matteo Salvini, si prepara a un attacco contro l’Europa, colpevole secondo lui di essere “distratta, complice e inutile” nei confronti dell’Italia. Durante il raduno di Pontida, Salvini cercherà di riscaldare il suo popolo e avvierà la corsa alle elezioni europee di giugno. For the past couple of days, Matteo Salvini has been launching an attack, particularly against Brussels, which he claims is “blind and deaf” towards Rome. He is preparing to strike against this “distracted, complicit, and useless” Europe, against the continuing influx of migrants, and to call for “extreme measures” after what he considers to be a failure of diplomatic avenues. However, this offensive risks turning into friendly fire against his government allies.

Salvini will take to the stage at Pontida on Sunday, where he will attempt to rally his supporters ahead of the European elections in June. Last time, in 2019, he achieved a 34% victory in Strasbourg, but now the most pessimistic predict he may not even reach 10%.

This will be the same location in the Bergamo region where the Lega party has held its annual gathering for the past 30 years. Salvini made a promise at the event last year, stating that he, Giorgia Meloni, and Silvio Berlusconi would govern well together for five years. He will now send a message to his government allies, perhaps more or less explicitly. There will be a commemoration for Berlusconi, who passed away in June, as well as for Roberto Maroni. However, the main focus will be the political front. Distances between the allies have grown in recent weeks, particularly with Antonio Tajani. Tensions have escalated, especially with regards to inviting the leader of the French sovereignist movement, Marine Le Pen, to Pontida.

The implicit accusation against the Meloni government seems to be that they have not done enough, as Salvini suggests, given that when he was Minister of the Interior, the number of irregular migrants was “less than a tenth” of what it is today. There has been no comment from Meloni’s supporters, but some have said that they expected it, considering the campaign-like atmosphere. A staunch supporter of the Lega party, Roberto Calderoli, has joined Salvini’s accusations. Calderoli, the Minister and father of the autonomy reform, emphasizes that the arrival of 127,000 immigrants since January is an “invasion” orchestrated by a hidden agenda, echoing Salvini’s claims.

Inside the majority coalition, Salvini will not miss an opportunity to promote his battles and demands for the upcoming economic package (particularly considering the financial constraints) and may even push for them during Monday’s Council of Ministers meeting. This meeting will have the new migration decree hanging over it, which Salvini recently mentioned and claimed that Minister Piantedosi is working on, although it is reported to not be ready yet. It remains to be seen if Salvini will propose a specific plan to the Committee for the Security of the Republic, which, despite being officially and perpetually convened on the migrant issue, could potentially meet before the Council of Ministers at 12:30 pm.
