The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has reportedly asked Tesla CEO Elon Musk to build an electric vehicle factory in his country. Erdogan, who is in New York for the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, took the opportunity to meet with Musk at the Turkish House, located close to the UN headquarters. Apart from the request, it is unclear what else the two discussed.
Currently, Tesla has a total of six manufacturing plants worldwide. It remains to be seen whether the request will be accepted, as many other countries are also vying to host one of Tesla’s new factories, starting with India. The world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer has already committed to building its seventh site in the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon by the end of this year.
There is speculation that the eighth Tesla factory could be responsible for producing the Model 2, a highly anticipated electric vehicle priced at $25,000. India is currently in the best position to secure the new factory. Initially, Tesla planned to export its electric vehicles to India. However, after local officials rejected the request to remove import tariffs, Musk has considered the possibility of building an electric vehicle factory in the country.
Interestingly, Turkey already has a local electric vehicle manufacturer called Togg. The Turkish automotive company began production and deliveries of its electric SUV model, the T10X, earlier this year, which has been met with success. In just 21 days, the company received 177,400 pre-orders for the vehicle.
